A Married Couple Becomes Fretful About Their Unhealthy Drinking, How it is Affecting Their Marriage, and Deliberates Whether They Display Any Signs of Alcoholism

Sarah and Jerry have been married for eight years. They wanted to have some excitement and fun before they decided to have some kids and so they consciously created an exceptionally vigorous social life.

The essential difficulty, it needs to be highlighted, is that nearly everything they do with their family and friends is associated with drinking. For example, all of the parties with friends, family get-togethers, dinner engagements, happy hours, and sporting events they attend include drinking.

If they were moderate or responsible drinkers, this wouldn’t be such a difficult situation. Since they drink quite irresponsibly, however, they are starting to perceive some apparent alcohol-related issues in their lives.

As an illustration, a short time ago Jerry was placed in custody for a second DUI and has been taking time off from work due to alcohol-related health issues. Not only this, but Jerry’s last two or three performance reviews at work have been less than admirable and he has started to forget what he does or says when he drinks. Similar to Jerry’s situation, Sarah has been feeling down in the dumps with things in her life and to cope with these feelings, she has been drinking more often than any time in the past eleven months. One Thursday evening while watching TV, Sarah and Jerry stumbled upon an out-of-the-ordinary program about the signs of alcoholism.

This TV program was a real eye opener to Jerry and Sarah because quite a few of the alcoholism signs that were emphasized looked as if they were unquestionably linked to several of the alcohol-related drinking problems Sarah and Jerry had been experiencing.

After watching the TV documentary, Jerry and Sarah decided to have a frank dialogue about their drinking condition. They both agreed that most, if not all, of their social pursuits included drinking, that they were drinking abusively, and that as a couple, they were beginning to observe alcohol related relationship, legal, financial, employment, and health problems for the first time since they were married.

With thoughts of the TV documentary still fresh in her mind, Sarah asked Jerry if some of the alcohol addiction signs they have been displaying could be an indication that they are dependent on alcohol or conceivably becoming alcoholic. Jerry didn’t know the answer to Sarah’s question and so he recommended that they schedule an appointment with one of the physicians at the local drug and alcohol abuse rehab clinic to find out more about the gravity of their drinking situation.
