Abusive Personality
Personality uniquely defines oneself; in other words, personality is the set of characteristics that distinctly identifies one person from another. One’s personality is usually influenced by experiences and knowledge that helps to deal with the matters that develop as life goes on. Therefore, developing one’s personality is a must to succeed in life. However, an abusive personality is a specific kind of personality that is harmful to others as well oneself.
As any other personality would display signs and characteristics of their type, an abusive personality reveals characteristics that are generally considered as warning signs. Although the display of these signs does not necessarily imply that one has an abusive personality, a greater number of warning signs suggest a greater inclination towards abusiveness. These warning signs include extreme jealousy for another, dominance of behaviour where one tries to be in control and being overly possessive. Initially, the person may even try to conceal his/her dominating behavior as concern or love towards the other person and the victim may be grateful at first. However, as time passes by, this conduct would become more severe and he/she will tend to control the other party by influencing and threatening them. A person with an abusive personality would also try to seclude the other party from any social fundamental interactions by inhibiting them to associate with friends or relatives.
Another distinctive characteristic of a person with an abusive personality is having impractical expectations. There is always that person who wants to be the perfectionist that would go to the extent of blaming others for not meeting their expectations. This is definitely an irrational and impractical mindset] of an abusive personality. Furthermore, the person will always deny responsibility for any violent or negative acts caused by him/her. “It wasn’t me!” would be a common phrase by the abuser because they are never to be faulted for any act of violence they may have intended. It is commonly stated that they were provoked to act in such a manner by the victim.
An abusive personality would also obligate the person to be hypersensitive and therefore, they are easily offended or upset. The slightest incident in any event can cause an outbreak and loss of temper. Abrupt mood swings would also occur in a person with an abusive personality causing them to be loving one moment and aggressive the next. It is not unusual for persons with an absuive personality to also verbally abuse their victims by frequently humiliating them.
Immediate help should be sought by those with an abusive personality. Counseling services may provide the necessary guidance to overcome abusiveness. It should be remembered that it is not a shame to seek help for oneself when it is needed.
