How To Get A Good Night’s Sleep

What are the components of a good night’s sleep? Let’s leave the complicated stuff out for a moment and focus just on the physical things you need to enjoy a sound night’s sleep. It’s pretty basic, really. You need a comfortable surface to sleep on and you need to be neither too warm nor too cold.

Getting the basic ingredients right isn’t that difficult, but if you want to really sleep in the lap of luxury, you find that there is almost no limit to the levels of luxury you can find in beds and bedding these days.

The Japanese futon is an example of a very utilitarian type of mattress that serves many purposes. While it may not be ideal for any of those purposes, the futon is great as a spare bed that can be stored away when not in use. It can also double as a couch if you live in a studio apartment or are otherwise short on space. Just add a low base and some pillows to use as backrests and you have a couch. When it comes time to sleep, toss the big pillows on the ground and pull out a blanket or quilt and go to sleep.

Most people prefer to use the traditional western box spring/mattress combination. There are so many of these available that one company’s version of a ‘medium’ mattress will feel like another’s ‘firm’ model. You could spend a lot of time trying to decide which one is best for you.

When you start thinking about bed frames, you are getting into more subtle territory. Sleigh beds, for instance, won’t add or detract from the comfort level of your bed, but they do have their effect on the way you sleep. It’s easy to see how sleeping on a sleigh will be a very different experience from sleeping on a loft bed or a 4 poster. They all actually make a difference to how well you sleep at night.

A twin sleigh bed for a child of eight is a completely different experience to a twin loft bed. It’s a completely different experience, even after he’s become accustomed to his bed and the novelty wears off.

A king sleigh bed in the master bedroom gives the entire room a luxurious feel. When your bedroom has a large bed like this with a high quality quilt set, you will sleep better even if you are sleeping on a normal mattress.

If there is a point to this exercise, it is to demonstrate how your personal choice of beds and bedding makes a difference to how well you sleep at night. How well you sleep also has a bearing on how well you feel the next morning. Your bed is a more important part of your life than you might think!
