Laborer By Day Boyfriend By Night
Everybody thought it looked like he wore girls shirts to work. It was just that he had some old, out of style shirts and he wanted to save his cool shirts for better times. Work was sweaty and dusty and he couldn’t see a need to be cool among a bunch of guys he didn’t even know.
So he drove the fork lift up and down the rows. He picked up whatever the boss man said to pick up. He didn’t like it but a guys gotta eat.
He started his day in the morning with bacon and eggs and maybe waffles. For lunch a light salad or sandwich. Dinner was the big deal of the day. He’d go out with his girl or his buddies for a beer and a burger.
The days drudgery got him down sometimes. Driving up one row of furniture and down the other. Picking up luxury appliances and big screen TVs for the customers who paid his wages. Who will sleep on a new Vera Wang mattress tonight?
A bright guy like him needed more challenging things than this. He had no chances in this small town. He could only see a future in the city if he wanted to make his fortune.
Already halfway through his twenties, he was primed to succeed. His girl had an eternity ring, now she should be getting a diamond engagement ring. He didn’t need to impress her exactly. He did, however, need to grab hold of a future for himself and take her along with him.
She stood there in front of the restaurant, waiting for him to join her for dinner. She wore matching brown suede boots and a matched hobo bag. Her dress was feminine. She had a look of love in her eyes as he drove up and they walked hand in hand into the cool restaurant.
Sliding into a cool booth they ordered drinks and food. Steak and salad were one of their favorite meals. It was not too unhealthy if you count the salad as the healthy half.
They enjoyed talking about their day. She spent hers in class. He spent his at work. They came together to share common interests in music and recreational pursuits. She focused on him and often longed for him to join her in the world of academics that she so loved.
He enjoyed their time together and they shared everything. He had funny anecdotes, she had academic stories. They had fun, but, she wished he could join her in the academic world she was involved in.
