When a superstar older man gets together with a young model or starlet, it makes the news, but doesn’t come as a surprise. But when we see young women dating older men in our city streets, it is the subject of intense gossip. There must be a lot of gossip going around, because it’s happening more and more often.
Gossip is fueled by stereotypical thought. When we are uninformed about something we don’t understand, we fill in the blanks with information we got from the media. The media is rarely enlightening, however, because to sell, it must shock us with titillating bits of misinformation. “She’s after his money” and “he’s trying to relive his youth” are the common stereotypical reactions to seeing a young woman with an older man.
It’s strange, isn’t it, that no one just asks the woman why she has chosen to date an older man. It could be an enlightening exercise. You might learn that they are attracted to his stable center, that quiet maturity that can only come after having seen a lot of life. Young women sometimes tire of dating hypersexual young men and enjoy dating someone they can talk to.
Is youth always sexier than age? If you judge it by the age of the “sexiest man in the world” polls, it doesn’t look like it. Someone under the age of forty rarely if ever makes it to the top of those polls. Why wouldn’t the same thing be true of the rest of the male population.
Surprisingly enough, a man’s wealth is rarely the reason younger women are attracted to them. While success is often a sign of a man’s inner resources, often a common passion for a shared interest is the springboard for a relationship. It’s the wealth of experience and passion for life that makes an older man attractive, rather than his bank balance.
Whatever the reasons, and there are many, the phenomenon of young women dating older men is growing, so we may as well get used to it. Maybe you younger men are going to have to lift your game if you want to compete!
